St Maarten / Saint Martin Vacation Rentals
Split between Guadeloupe and the Netherlands Antilles, St Maarten is among the tiniest bits of land to be divided between different nations. The north is known as Saint-Martin. It is French and is twenty-one square miles in size. The south is called St Maarten. The sixteen square meters is Dutch. The island has three main settlements, Marigot, the capital of the French side; Grand Case which is French and famous for the food; and Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side and the busiest port for cruise ships. Two things to keep in mind here. One, the electricity on the two sides differs with 250V 50Hz on the French side and 110/120 60Hz on the Dutch side. Two, calling across from one side to the other is an international call.
The Dutch side is very developed and popular, with lots of shopping, casinos, resorts, nightclubs, and plenty of beaches. On the freely accessed French side there is less development, but more natural beauty. The most famous spots are Orient Beach and the nudist resort, Club Orient, plus the many shopping choices and fine dining that the French are known for. The flavor here is more “European” then the Dutch side. Most people here know Dutch, French, and English.
If you want something special to do consider to stop at Butterfly Farm on the French side. Otherwise you have to pick of over 37 different beaches, with plenty of bars and Cafes dotting them. There are also many water sports and various sailing options you can engage in. Both sides offer plenty of shopping and many places to eat too. If you are looking to party and live it up then stick to the Dutch side for the best values.
