Maine Vacation Rentals: Beach Homes, Cottages, Cabins
Maine has magnificent coastlines, dotted with countless islands, deep water harbors, and glacier-carved bays. The dramatic beauty is home to fishing villages, summer resorts, and colonial towns, mostly clustered in the south. For more wild settings the northeast is nearly untouched. Start with a visit to the old city or Portland, where the downtown is filled to the brim with lively restaurants and glowing art galleries. Heading east the Mid Coast area is a mixture of old shipbuilding villages, academic settlements and pretty harbor towns with the furthest eastern point being occupied by Acadia National Park which is a fantastic mountain island with lakes, fjord-like estuaries and coves. Beyond this are the wild and beautiful peninsulas and jagged cliffs that merge into Canada. Over ninety percent of the state is covered with forests that are home to thousands of lakes. Bethel and Rangeley offer skiing while summer camping is far more likely to run you face to face with a moose or bald eagle then another human. Rafting is a popular pass time as is Kayaking on the coast. Plenty of hiking, bird-watching, mountain biking and rock climbing options wait for those who thrive on challenge. No matter where you go the seafood is plentiful and the locals know how to cook it just right. Mid Coast is perhaps the best area to experience this, along with sailing and exploring seaside villages.
